Founded in 1921 by Jesse Binga, a successful real estate entrepreneur and one of the wealthiest Black businessmen in Chicago at the time, the bank was created to serve the growing Black community on the city’s South Side during the Great Migration. As thousands of foundational Black Americans moved north seeking opportunity and escape from the Jim Crow South, Binga Bank provided something that many traditional banks refused to offer—access to loans, mortgages, and financial services for Black families and business owners.

Through Binga Bank and his real estate ventures, Jesse Binga helped many Black Chicago residents purchase homes and build businesses, contributing to the growth of what would become the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. At its height, Binga Bank was one of the most prominent Black-owned financial institutions in the country and a powerful example of Black economic progress. Like many banks during the Great Depression, Binga Bank eventually closed in the early 1930s, but its legacy remains an important chapter in the story of Black American entrepreneurship and community development in Chicago.
