Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma became one of the most prosperous Black American communities in the United States during the early 20th century. Founded by foundational Black American entrepreneurs and families, the Greenwood District quickly grew into a thriving center of business, culture, and self-sufficiency. By the 1910s and early 1920s, the neighborhood was filled with Black-owned banks, hotels, theaters, restaurants, grocery stores, and professional offices. Because of its remarkable economic success and concentration of Black-owned businesses, the area earned the legendary nickname “Black Wall Street.”

The district stood as a powerful example of Black American economic independence until 1921, when the community was violently attacked during the Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the most devastating acts of racial violence in American history. Over the course of two days, much of the Greenwood District was destroyed, and thousands of residents were displaced. Despite the devastation, the spirit of Greenwood endured, and many residents rebuilt their businesses and homes in the years that followed. The area’s cultural legacy also continues through music history—legendary funk group The Gap Band, fronted by Charlie Wilson, took its name from the three historic streets that anchor the district: Greenwood, Archer, and Pine, proudly representing the heart of Tulsa’s historic Black community. Today, the story of Greenwood is remembered as both a symbol of Black American prosperity and resilience. Visitors can explore the area through the Greenwood Historic District and the Greenwood Rising History Center, which preserve and honor the legacy of this remarkable community.
