Idlewild, Michigan was one of the most famous vacation destinations created by and for Black Americans during the early 20th century, at a time when segregation prevented Black families from enjoying most resorts across the United States. Founded in 1912 in northern Michigan, Idlewild quickly became a thriving lakeside community where foundational Black Americans could purchase property, build summer homes, and vacation freely. By the 1920s through the 1950s, Idlewild had grown into a premier resort town known for its beaches, hotels, nightclubs, and cultural life. It attracted successful Black doctors, lawyers, educators, entertainers, and entrepreneurs from cities like Chicago, Detroit, and New York. Because of its prosperity and vibrant atmosphere, the town earned the nickname “Black Eden.”

Idlewild was also a major stop on the entertainment circuit known as the Chitlin’ Circuit, where legendary performers such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Wilson, and Aretha Franklin performed in packed clubs and dance halls. During the summer months, the town would come alive with music, nightlife, and social events that made Idlewild one of the most exciting cultural hubs in Black America. Decades later, the town’s legacy even inspired the setting for the 2006 musical film “Idlewild,” starring the legendary hip-hop duo OutKast, bringing renewed attention to this historic community. Today, Idlewild still exists and visitors can explore the area and learn about its remarkable past through the Idlewild Historic District, where the story of this once-legendary Black American resort town continues to be preserved.
