The Inkwell – Martha’s Vineyard Historic Beach Tee
The Inkwell on Martha’s Vineyard holds an important place in Black American leisure and cultural history. Located in the Oak Bluffs section of the island, the beach became a welcoming destination for Black Americans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during a time when segregation limited access to many public beaches and resorts across the country. Oak Bluffs itself developed into one of the few vacation communities where foundational Black Americans could buy property, build summer homes, and vacation freely. Over the decades, the area grew into a beloved gathering place for generations of Black families, professionals, artists, and leaders.
The name “Inkwell,” originally used as a derogatory term during segregation, was reclaimed by the community and transformed into a symbol of pride, culture, and belonging. By the mid-20th century, Martha’s Vineyard had become one of the most prestigious summer destinations for Black American professionals, including doctors, lawyers, entertainers, and political leaders. Figures such as Paul Robeson, Dorothy West, Harry Belafonte, and later President Barack Obama and his family have all spent time on the island. The beach’s cultural significance even inspired the 1994 coming-of-age film “The Inkwell,” directed by Matty Rich, which starred actors such as Larenz Tate, Jada Pinkett (now Jada Pinkett Smith), Joe Morton, and Morris Chestnut. The film introduced many people to the unique culture and summertime traditions of Martha’s Vineyard’s historic Black vacation community. Today, the Inkwell remains one of the most well-known beaches associated with Black American vacation culture and a lasting symbol of community, legacy, and relaxation.
This tee carries that story forward in the most comfortable way possible. It’s the kind of soft, easygoing shirt you can throw on while relaxing at home, heading out for the day, meeting friends, or wearing on a casual night out.
